In recent years, Portugal has rapidly become a preferred destination for global investors and families seeking to relocate.
According to the latest data released by the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (AIMA), as of the end of October 2025, the country has issued 386,463 residence permits, an increase of over 60% compared to the same period last year, setting a new historical record. This not only reflects the ongoing popularity of the Portuguese residence program but also further demonstrates the government's substantial achievements in accelerating approval efficiency.

Digital reforms and workforce expansion have significantly improved approval efficiency
The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service continues to advance digital reforms, greatly enhancing processing efficiency. The online renewal platform has assisted over 32,000 to 33,000 residents in updating their permits online without the need for in-person appointments, thereby reducing long queues at service centers.
The number of staff at the Immigration and Borders Service has expanded to 770, a 10% increase from last year, now better equipped to manage the growing foreign population in Portugal. The agency is committed to digital reforms and improving service efficiency.
Previously, a minister from the Portuguese Presidency announced that the Immigration and Borders Service would complete the clearance of all backlog cases within the year and promised to achieve "zero backlog and efficient operation" by 2026.
