Recently, members of the European Parliament voted 514 to 107 to pass a non-legislative report supporting the accession of Romania and Bulgaria as full members of the Schengen Area.
The final decision on whether Romania and Bulgaria can become part of the Schengen Area requires a unanimous vote by the ministers of EU member states in the Council. Last week, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his hope that Romania would become a member of the Schengen Area by the end of the Commission's current term, which would mean the official date for both countries to join the Schengen Area would be set for October 2019.
For those holding visas from Schengen countries (such as Greece, Portugal, Malta, Spain, etc.), with the addition of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area, a single Schengen visa will allow for free travel across 28 countries instead of the previous 26.
