On the 10th, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that it is quite unusual to appoint a sitting minister as an ambassador. Mendicino is a seasoned politician and economist, having served as a professor of economics at several universities and as Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the Royal Bank of Canada.

After being elected as a Member of Parliament in 2000, Mendicino has held positions such as Minister of National Defence and Minister of Veterans Affairs. He joined the cabinet at the end of 2015 as a political elder when Trudeau took office.

On the 10th, while explaining Mendicino's appointment, Trudeau stated, "I need to send top people out to handle the highest-level relationships in the world."

It is well known that Mendicino visited Beijing in August 2016, successfully advocating for the establishment of more Canadian visa application centers in China, attracting Chinese students, immigrants, tourists, and temporary workers to Canada, which caused a significant stir in China.

On the 11th, Mendicino also specifically mentioned that his wife, Lin Xiuying, is of Chinese descent, and therefore the whole family has "special expectations" for his role as ambassador to China.

Throughout 2016, the Canadian federal government plans to continue accelerating the intake of immigrants, targeting 300,000 individuals. According to the latest report from the Canada Council, Canada’s population needs to increase to 100 million by the end of this century, which means a significant increase in the number of Canadian immigrants is required.
