This exemption applies to: applicants who have already submitted or are newly submitting applications for permanent residence or temporary visas within Canada; applicants who have undergone an immigration medical examination within the past five years must provide their previous medical identifier number. This policy is effective until October 6, 2024. This exemption is intended to simplify the application process and accelerate the speed at which the immigration department processes applications. In addition, applicants who do not meet the conditions of this temporary public policy are required to undergo an immigration medical examination (IME) in accordance with standard health check procedures. The immigration department will contact individuals who do not meet the exemption criteria to discuss next steps.
This temporary public policy will help simplify the processing of low-risk applicants, with the goal of providing better customer service, supporting faster application processing, and effectively managing public health risks. Between May 2021 and March 2022, the immigration department implemented two similar temporary public policies that eliminated the need for a second IME. These measures simplified the application process, saved costs, and accelerated processing procedures. The first two temporary public policies benefited approximately 85,000 applicants, while the latest public policy is estimated to benefit more than 180,000 additional applicants.
