Recently, Toronto's first large-scale vaccination clinic has begun operations. It is expected to vaccinate 250 people daily, with the capacity to expand the vaccination scale at any time. This pilot program will help Ontario establish a new model for administering vaccines in non-medical settings.
According to reports, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Mayor John Tory visited the clinic and shared photos on Twitter.
The government has thoughtfully established the vaccination clinic within the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, which is the largest convention center in Toronto. Photos show that the clinic has ample space to vaccinate many people while maintaining a safe distance of 2 meters.
Currently, the clinic's operating hours are seven days a week, from 11 AM to 8 PM, and it is expected to remain open for at least six weeks. It aims to vaccinate 250 individuals daily, with the possibility of scaling up as needed. The opening of this clinic will provide experience for establishing more vaccination clinics in other parts of Ontario and will offer a new approach for the province, with similar clinics expected to open in other locations.
The Mayor of Ontario stated that this clinic is intended to create a facility for frontline healthcare workers to receive vaccinations and to assess its operation for potential improvements. This way, when establishing 50 or even 100 similar vaccination clinics across Ontario in the future, the experiences from this clinic can be referenced.
The Canadian government hopes that everyone wishing to receive a vaccine will be vaccinated by September 2021. According to data from the University of Windsor's vaccine tracker, as of January 22, 2021, Canada has received 1,122,500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 769,000 doses have been administered. In Ontario, 265,000 doses have already been administered. With Ontario's proactive efforts, it is believed that more individuals will be vaccinated in a short period.
Additionally, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) recently announced that the COVID-19 vaccination program is free for everyone in Canada, regardless of their citizenship status! The PHAC informed CIC News that immigration status will not be a factor in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
In other words, all international students, accompanying parents, work permit holders, and any temporary residents in Canada will have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for free! This is excellent news for all temporary residents in Canada.
