Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that starting January 26, 2021, all travelers entering the United States on international flights (including U.S. citizens) must undergo a COVID-19 test within three days prior to boarding and provide the airline with a negative test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (in paper or electronic format), otherwise they will not be allowed to board the flight.
The CDC stated that this measure aims to more effectively protect the health of Americans during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The order was signed by the CDC Director on January 12 and will take effect on January 26. The statement indicated that airlines must verify the negative test results or recovery documentation before all passengers board. If passengers do not provide the relevant documentation, airlines must deny boarding to those passengers.
Regarding the release of this new regulation, CDC Director Robert Redfield stated: "Testing does not eliminate all risk, but when combined with staying home and daily preventive measures such as wearing masks and social distancing, it can reduce transmission on planes and in airports, making travel safer, healthier, and more responsible."
The CDC also recommends that passengers isolate at home for seven days after arriving in the United States and undergo another COVID-19 test 3 to 5 days after arrival.
