Recently, reports from the Portuguese Chinese Newspaper indicate that an amendment to Portugal's Nationality Law will allow immigrant children who have resided in Portugal for at least one year to apply for Portuguese citizenship. This proposal is expected to be approved by the PS, PCP, and PAN parties on Thursday.
The current provisions of the Portuguese Nationality Law state that a child born in Portugal can apply for Portuguese nationality if either parent has resided in Portugal for at least two years. If this amendment to the Nationality Law is passed, it means that a child born in Portugal may become a Portuguese citizen if one parent has legally resided in the country for at least one year.
This undoubtedly represents a significant benefit for investors! It greatly reduces the nationality acquisition requirements for newborns and minors of foreigners born in Portugal, simplifying and standardizing the process of obtaining citizenship. It is believed that this modification to the Portuguese Nationality Law will attract more investors to immigrate to Portugal through the Golden Residence Visa program and obtain Portuguese passports.
In fact, Portugal has long been favored by immigrants! According to the latest data published by the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), since the Golden Residence Program was launched in October 2012 until June 2020, Portugal has attracted investments totaling €5.375 billion through the Golden Visa program, with 8,907 main applicants and 15,229 dependent applicants approved for the Golden Visa. By nationality, there were 4,631 Chinese applicants, accounting for approximately 52%, illustrating the strong preference and recognition of Portuguese investment projects by Chinese investors.
As one of the member states of the European Union, investors can obtain Portuguese Golden Residence status by purchasing real estate starting from €350,000 through the Golden Residence Program, allowing three generations of the family to apply for residency, enjoy the substantial social benefits and quality educational resources of Portugal, travel freely across 26 Schengen countries, while also acquiring property with permanent ownership—truly a win-win situation!
Moreover, individuals holding a Portuguese Golden Residence Permit for five years and meeting the annual seven-day residence requirement, as well as passing the Portuguese A2 language level exam, will qualify to apply for Portuguese nationality and receive a Portuguese EU passport, enjoying the excellent benefits of EU citizenship.
Currently, immigration to Portugal continues to rise, and the real estate investment immigration project is very popular. Those interested in investing in Portugal should seize the favorable policy conditions and take advantage of the remaining opportunities for purchasing properties in Lisbon and Porto to obtain residency status sooner.
