The Cypriot government's response to the COVID-19 crisis has been praised worldwide. In a recent article in the UK's Daily Express, Cyprus was ranked as the fifth safest place in the world, considering factors such as healthcare and the virus situation.
On May 4, Cyprus officially took the first step toward unlocking. The strategy to lift restrictions and restart the economy is divided into four phases, gradually easing the lockdown.
Phase 1: Lifting of restrictions from May 4 to May 20, 2020, as follows
– Construction industry and all parallel activities
– Retail trade - shops other than shopping malls. Dates and times will be set by the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health
– Open markets, street vendors
– Cruise ship refueling without passengers disembarking or crew changes
– Commercial crew changes, and transport of private vessels to permitted areas for mooring, maintenance, and repair
– Secondary schools to open for graduating classes starting May 11, both public and private
– Hospital appointments for surgeries will proceed according to protective measures set by the Ministry of Health
– Dental centers
– Tourist and travel agencies
– Car washes
– Public transport capacity increased to 50%, including buses, taxis, etc.
– Full operation of civil servants and the wider public sector, and more
Phase 2: Lifting of restrictions from May 21 to June 8, as follows
– Hair salons
– Restaurants, but only in outdoor areas
– Libraries
– Museums, archaeological and historical sites
– Full operation of ports, with passengers unable to disembark
Phase 3: Lifting of restrictions from June 9 to July 13, as follows
– Shopping malls
– Gradual and conditional resumption of air travel, airports/airlines
– Ports, cruise ship maintenance
– Dining in restaurants in both indoor and outdoor areas
– Hotels
– Beaches, while maintaining safe distances
– Open-air cinemas and theaters
– Gyms
– University summer sessions, and more
Phase 4: Lifting of restrictions from July 14, as follows
– Theaters and cinemas
– Festivals and concerts
– Casinos
– Amusement areas in both indoor and outdoor spaces, and more
It must be emphasized that the recovery process will be based on the epidemic prevention and control situation. For public travel measures, there are also different restrictions according to different phases: starting from May 4, citizens will be allowed to apply for travel 3 times a day, for 3 hours each time. From May 21, movement restrictions will be completely lifted, but for free activities in parks, outdoor play areas, squares, marinas, etc., the number of people gathering must not exceed 10, and so on.
With the gradual unlocking of Cyprus, it means that the Cypriot real estate investment and tourism/homestay industries will gradually return to pre-epidemic levels, and the economy is about to restart. For investors, now is a good time to invest in Cyprus.
Recently, the Cyprus Investment Programme has ushered in major benefits. The Cypriot government plans to accelerate the approval of the backlog of immigration applications; in addition, the government will speed up the approval process for immigration applications, with the prospect of obtaining EU status within 6 months and enabling zero-entry applications; at the same time, it may cancel the 2020 limit of 700 immigration application quotas; and relax restrictions on political figures applying for Cyprus immigration, etc.
Meanwhile, it is highly likely that the UK Brexit transition period will be extended until the end of 2022. For those who want to move to the UK, obtaining an EU citizenship quickly before the end of the transition period can be considered a better springboard for moving to the UK via a roundabout route. Applicants who intend to go to the UK via a Cyprus EU passport should seize the time to process it.
Cyprus Investment Citizenship Methods
1. Purchase Cyprus real estate starting from 2 million Euros (whether one or multiple properties), and donate 150,000 Euros; the whole family of three generations can apply for a Cyprus passport;
2. Apply for immigration to Cyprus by purchasing, establishing, or participating in the investment of a Cypriot enterprise, investing 2 million Euros to subscribe for equity in the project (such as the Limassol Golf Resort project introduced by Worldway), while purchasing Cyprus real estate starting from 500,000 Euros, and donating 150,000 Euros; the whole family of three generations can apply for a Cyprus passport.
Worldway Group, one of the top 500 Asian brands, has maintained good interaction with the Cypriot government for many years. In 2011, it was the first to introduce the Cyprus permanent residence and citizenship by investment program to China, starting a wonderful journey of European investment immigration; in 2014, the "Paphos Night" events in Beijing and Shanghai were investment and cultural exchange events themed around European cities in China.
