What are the differences between visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and e-visa?

Although some countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival status to Chinese passport holders, it is not as simple as just carrying a passport and buying a plane ticket; there are many important details to consider. Otherwise, you risk being denied entry at customs.

I. Types of Visas

1. Visa-free: You can travel with just your passport; no visa application is required.

2. Visa fee waiver: You must follow the standard visa application procedure, but no visa fees are charged.

3. Visa-on-arrival: You apply while queuing at the airport, submitting documents and paying the visa fee on-site.

4. E-visa: You apply and pay for the visa online. Once issued, the visa is sent via email; you must print it out and present it with your passport upon entry.

The only visa types that do not require prior application in your home country are "visa-free" and "visa-on-arrival," and visa-on-arrival is not the same as visa-free. Visa-free means you can enter directly by carrying your passport and travel documents (usually return flight tickets and hotel confirmation). Visa-on-arrival requires you to queue for processing at the airport before entry. (Required documents vary by country, but generally include return flight tickets, hotel confirmation, and photos).

II. Four Important Considerations for Visa-on-Arrival

1. Visa-on-arrival is not available for independent travel

Taking Vietnam as an example, many people often assume it is a visa-on-arrival country and plan to fly directly to places like Nha Trang or Da Nang after buying a ticket. In reality, only Phu Quoc Island offers visa-on-arrival for independent travelers in Vietnam.

For other parts of Vietnam, you must join a tour group organized by a travel agency to be eligible for a visa-on-arrival. If you wish to travel independently, you must apply for a visa in advance.

2. Denial of entry due to unclear ports of entry

Many countries do not offer visa-on-arrival at all ports of entry for Chinese citizens. For example, countries like Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine only offer visa-on-arrival at designated airports. If you enter via land borders, you cannot apply for a visa-on-arrival and must obtain the appropriate visa in advance to enter.

3. Denial of entry or deportation due to insufficient cash

Thailand is a classic example. When entering with a Thai visa-on-arrival, you may be subject to random checks by customs to ensure you are carrying sufficient cash: tourists on a visa-on-arrival are required to carry 10,000 Thai Baht (for individuals) or 20,000 Thai Baht (for families). If you are found to have insufficient cash, you may be denied entry or even deported on the spot.

4. Denial of boarding due to lack of transit visa

Some countries that offer visa-on-arrival to Chinese citizens do not have direct flights from China. If you transfer through other countries, you may need a transit visa for the transit country. For example, to enter San Marino, you must pass through Italy; Jamaica usually requires a transfer in the United States; and for the British territory of Saint Helena, which can only be reached by the RMS St Helena ship from South Africa, you must obtain a double-entry South African transit visa.
