Recently, China Eastern Airlines announced plans to launch a direct flight route from Shanghai, China to Athens, Greece in June 2020. This will be the first direct flight connecting Shanghai and Athens.
Currently, among the direct flights from China to Greece, Air China operates three flights per week (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday) from Beijing to Athens, which is expected to increase to four flights per week in 2020. However, to fly from Shanghai to Greece, passengers must transit through cities such as Moscow, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, or Doha. Therefore, this route by China Eastern Airlines will be the first direct flight from Shanghai to Greece. It is reported that the flight will be operated by China Eastern Airlines' flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with three flights per week.
Athens is located in the central plain of Attica, surrounded by mountains on three sides and bordered by the sea on one side, characterized by a typical subtropical Mediterranean climate. As the capital of Greece, Athens has a population of nearly 750,000 and covers a total area of 412 square kilometers, making it the eighth largest city in Europe and one of the commercial centers of the European Union. It is understood that in addition to China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines has also obtained operating permission from the Civil Aviation Administration of China for a direct flight route from Chengdu to Athens, and the inaugural flight is expected to be announced soon.
