Statistics Canada (StatsCan) released a report on September 17, local time, stating that Canada's population will nearly double by 2068, with the majority of this growth resulting from sustained immigration.
The report from Statistics Canada examines the trends and current status of Canada's population growth. Canada's population has grown significantly in recent years, increasing from 30.7 million in 2000 to 37.1 million in 2018. Statistics Canada notes that while the populations of many developed countries are expected to decline, Canada's population is projected to grow over the next 50 years, primarily due to strong growth in immigration numbers.
Projections indicate that Canada's population will continue to grow over the next 50 years, potentially reaching between 44.4 million and 70.2 million by 2068. Under a medium-growth scenario, Canada's population would increase from 37.1 million in 2018 to 55.2 million in 2068.
It is clear that immigration remains the primary driver of Canada's population growth for the next 50 years, as it has been since the early 1990s. Data shows that Canada welcomed 320,000 new immigrants in 2018, marking one of the largest immigration waves in a century, with nearly 140,000 immigrants received in the last three months of 2018, setting a 47-year record.
Furthermore, according to the "Million Immigration Plan" promoted by the Canadian federal government, the immigration quota for 2019 was 330,800, for 2020 was 341,000, and for 2021 was 350,000, with a total of 1,021,800 immigrants to be admitted over the three-year plan. By extension, if the Canadian government continues to keep its doors open to immigrants and consistently increases immigration targets, it is believed that Canada's future population will continue to grow.
Canada's demographic dividend will bring sustained and rapid growth to the country's economy and society. At the same time, Canada boasts a sound welfare system, high quality of life, high safety index, and strong social inclusivity. Moreover, Canada is a country with high global educational standards, advanced educational philosophies, and a high proportion of GDP invested in the education sector. In the future, more people may choose to immigrate and settle in Canada.
