Last year, the number of Italian citizens residing in Portugal increased from 8,523 (in 2016) to 12,927, an increase of 4,407, representing a growth rate of 51.7%. Following Italians, the number of French citizens increased from 11,293 to 15,319, an increase of 4,012; the number of British citizens rose from 19,384 to 22,431, an increase of 3,047.
The migration of EU citizens is primarily driven by several reasons: academic research, employment, lifestyle, and Portugal's positive international image. The low cost of living and tax incentives in Portugal have led to a 35.4% increase in the number of Swedes residing in Portugal (totaling 3,564), 29.7% for Irish (1,337), 23% for Belgians (3,508), 20.4% for Poles (1,898), 16.5% for Finns (1,153), 14.6% for Dutch (7,837), and 12.5% for Spaniards (12,526).
Experts state: "Portugal's immigration has always been in a process of diversification, not only in terms of the nationalities coming in but also in the reasons motivating immigration. The language and culture of Portugal make it more appealing for many young people from neighboring countries to seek development here."
Currently, Brazilians remain the largest foreign group in Portugal, totaling 85,426, followed by Cape Verdeans (34,986), Ukrainians (32,453), Romanians (30,750), and Chinese (23,197).
