In a recent interview, McCallum stated: "Under the current policy, spouses cannot immediately obtain permanent residency upon arriving in Canada; they must wait approximately 2 years. If the marriage ends during this period, the spouse's permanent residency may be revoked. In our previous federal election platform, we mentioned that we would terminate this provision, allowing spouses to obtain permanent residency immediately upon arrival."
Amendments to the Citizenship Act Benefit New Immigrants
Additionally, on February 25, McCallum formally submitted an amendment to Bill C-24 to the House of Commons, which includes the repeal of the federal government's power to revoke Canadian citizenship from certain criminals, shortening the residency requirement for citizenship, and relaxing the age limits for applicants to meet language requirements. These changes will significantly reduce the difficulty of immigration and help new immigrants adapt to life in Canada.
