UK Immigration focus on UK immigration economy: Recently, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the government department supporting UK exporters, signed cooperation agreements with five major Chinese e-commerce platforms. It is estimated that these agreements will provide £1 billion in export opportunities for UK businesses over the next three years. Consequently, China's 650 million internet users and its continuously growing online shopping market will expand business channels for UK enterprises.
As part of the economic and trade cooperation discussions during President Xi Jinping's visit to the UK, the cooperation signing ceremony was held in London at the one-day summit themed "China: New Opportunities in Retail." This partnership is part of UK Trade & Investment's e-commerce export program, which will help UK retail companies and brands accelerate their WorldWay expansion through online channels and facilitate the entry of UK businesses into the Chinese market.
UK Trade & Investment signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with the following Chinese e-commerce companies: JD Worldwide, NetEase/Kaola, Xiu.com, Mogujie, and Ctrip.
Catherine Raines, Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment, stated: "In China, the online retail market accounts for 90% of all e-commerce transactions. In the first quarter of this year alone, Chinese consumer spending on online shopping reached £367 billion. The agreements signed by UK Trade & Investment establish a direct channel to help UK businesses fully leverage China's unprecedented e-commerce opportunities with the support of the UK government and e-commerce platforms."
In addition to these MoUs, the UK government's GREAT Britain campaign is also conducting strategic promotion of British products on the Chinese luxury shopping website Xiu.com. Recently, Xiu.com launched "Shopping is GREAT," a platform showcasing British brands, which receives over 10 million visits per month.
UK Trade & Investment collaborates with many cross-border e-commerce companies to promote overseas sales for British firms. The online shopping market provides a cost-effective way for businesses to scale their operations to global consumers and capitalize on online sales trends.
It is also worth noting that the annual "China Overseas Investment Fair," the 3rd China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) China Outbound Conference, was recently held in Beijing. As a flagship event related to UK business, this "China Overseas Investment Fair" brought together political and business elites from both China and the UK. The British Minister to China, the Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council Lord Sassoon, and the Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhang Xiangchen attended and delivered keynote speeches.
"Globally, London is one of the most attractive developed cities for investment, especially in recent years as Chinese buyers have become increasingly active in the London real estate market. The UK's appeal stems first from its healthy and stable economic growth, dynamic industrial positioning, and future planning. At the same time, China-UK relations continue to improve, actively promoted by the leaders and governments of both countries. At this moment, Chinese companies are also beginning to consider overseas investment," said Mr. Ji Gang, Senior Director of the Investment Department at Savills.
Ji Gang specifically mentioned: Over the past two years, the Chinese government has encouraged companies to "go global," and more and more clients are investing in the UK, including insurance companies, developers, state-owned enterprises, sovereign wealth funds, private equity funds, and small and medium-sized enterprises. Mr. Zou Jinbiao, Chairman of Savills North China, also stated: "China-UK economic and trade cooperation is moving towards a 'Golden Era,' and China-UK real estate investment will continue to deepen. Both sides are currently taking measures to encourage Chinese investors to invest in UK infrastructure, redevelopment projects, and real estate. There will be larger-scale and deeper opportunities for economic and trade cooperation between China and the UK."
According to statistics from the China-Britain Business Council, in 2014, China's total outward foreign direct investment reached $116 billion, a year-on-year increase of 15.5%. China became a net capital exporter for the first time. At the same time, the Chinese government's "Belt and Road" policy has further incentivized the global ambitions of Chinese enterprises.
Industry insiders point out that for Chinese-funded enterprises, the UK is a relatively attractive investment destination in Europe. In 2014, China's total investment in the UK reached $5.1 billion, accounting for nearly 30% of its total investment in Europe. London is the world's largest RMB trading center outside of Hong Kong. With its strong and dynamic economy, world-class research and innovation capabilities, and industry strengths that meet Chinese demand, the UK is an ideal partner for Chinese enterprises, and businesses from both countries can work together to develop the global market.
