Children's education is one of the top concerns for all parents. As is well known, Hong Kong possesses abundant educational resources, an advanced system, and a sound framework, making it a key factor for many choosing to immigrate to Hong Kong. When immigrating to Hong Kong and selecting a kindergarten for your child, the basic criteria can be summarized into four points:
I. No Writing Before Age Four
Before the age of four, a child's hand muscles are not yet fully developed. Starting to write too early not only discourages interest in learning but also leads to incorrect pen-holding posture due to insufficient strength in the index finger, which naturally prevents the development of beautiful handwriting.
There is plenty of time to enhance academic knowledge later. First, foster a passion for learning in children; once their hand muscles have matured, the effectiveness of pen-holding, writing, and academic learning will be doubled with half the effort. There is no need to rush.
II. Located on the Ground Floor with an Outdoor Playground
The closer a kindergarten is to the ground level, the greater the child's sense of security, which is related to gravity and the Earth's magnetic field. Since infants and young children are more sensitive to magnetic fields than adults, they are more perceptive to subtle changes in their environment. On the other hand, an ideal campus environment must have sufficient sunlight, fresh air, and adequate opportunities for both gross and fine motor skill exercises. A learning environment close to nature can promote a child's brain development, while physical training lays the foundation for physical development and writing ability.
III. Full-day or Half-day Classes
Many parents choose to send their children to kindergarten too early; however, from the perspective of a child's psychological development, this is not an ideal arrangement. Because children under four have a strong sense of self-centeredness, entering a nursery class too early and leaving a familiar and safe home environment may be emotionally "torturous" for them. If a child is cared for by their mother, it is advisable to choose a half-day class, as most activities in full-day kindergarten programs in the afternoon are custodial in nature, such as napping, having snacks, singing, and playing games—activities that can also be guided by parents at home.
IV. Carefully Selected Teaching Methods
Hong Kong is a diverse society with a wide variety of early childhood teaching methods, the most common being Project Approach, Multiple Intelligences, Montessori, Story-based Integrated Activities, and Orff Music, among others. Regardless of the method, how it is implemented and practiced is the most important task and mission of a kindergarten. All teaching methods aim to achieve the goal of holistic child development through different approaches, respecting and understanding children's needs in all matters, rather than shaping children to meet the subjective expectations of adults.
