The route, with Toronto as the Canadian destination, marks the beginning of a new relationship between WestJet and Antigua and Barbuda, the result of months of negotiations based on mutual interests. Antigua and Barbuda's Minister of Tourism, John Maginley, noted, "Canada has proven to be a reliable tourism market as it has weathered the economic recession, and there are signs of continued economic growth." He further stated, "Research shows that the Canadian tourism market has not yet reached its full potential; therefore, increasing routes to Canada can ensure the full development and utilization of this market."
WestJet's entry into the Antigua and Barbuda market also brings its subsidiary, WestJet Vacations, to the local market, which can provide hotel and vacation services in collaboration with local partners. Currently, WestJet Vacations has 10 partner hotels on the island. Relying on WestJet's extensive network and loyal customer base, the company is able to continuously bring Canadian tourists to Antigua and Barbuda.
As one of the largest airline operators in North America, WestJet operates over 420 daily flights with approximately 98 Boeing 737 aircraft across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
