The total backlog of cases across 60 immigration courts nationwide reached 360,186 this year, compared to 223,809 in 2009. Additionally, the current average processing time for immigration cases is 573 days, compared to 497 days in 2009.
Due to the continuous surge in immigration backlogs and staff shortages in the courts, immense pressure has been placed on immigration judges. Adding to the burden, 100 judges will become eligible for retirement this year. Although the immigration reform bill passed by the Senate last year would have added 225 immigration judges, the bill was blocked in the House of Representatives.
