The Athens International Marathon is known for high competition temperatures and difficult routes, and this year's event was no exception. Although the starting temperature was 15 degrees Celsius, it rose significantly during the race, increasing humidity and making it more challenging for athletes to achieve good results.
In the men's race, the leading group recorded a time of 31 minutes and 01 seconds for the first 10 kilometers, aiming to break the event record of 2 hours 10 minutes and 55 seconds held by Italy's Baldini. However, by halfway, the leading group's speed decreased, recording a time of 1 hour 06 minutes and 48 seconds. Ultimately, only Yego, Chepkwony and Rutoh remained in the first group. At the 40-kilometer mark, Yego began to accelerate and took the lead, winning with a time of 2 hours 13 minutes and 59 seconds. Chepkwony and Rutoh finished in 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.
In the women's race, Kenya's Rotich maintained the lead from start to finish, finally crossing the finish line at the iconic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens with a time of 2 hours 41 minutes and 38 seconds. A total of 11,000 athletes participated in this event.
