Greece Investment Immigration Guide: Crete is one of the cradles of Mediterranean civilization. Neolithic cultural relics dating from 10,000 BC to 3,300 BC have been excavated here. From approximately 2600 BC to 1125 BC, the famous Minoan civilization emerged on the island, characterized by unprecedented prosperity in art, architecture, and engineering, and the establishment of a unified Minoan dynasty. In the early 20th century, the ruins of the Palace of Knossos were excavated in the northern part of the island. Its grand scale, which vaguely corresponds to the legendary labyrinth, represents the achievements of Minoan culture. Built against the mountains, it features a rectangular central courtyard surrounded by the King's palace, the Queen's chambers, the religiously significant Double Axe Palace, as well as storage rooms and warehouses. The buildings are connected by long corridors, vestibules, passages, and staircases, creating a complex, winding layout with thousands of doors and rooms, earning it the name "Labyrinth." Every room and corridor is adorned with magnificent frescoes, most notably "The Prince of the Lilies." Outside the northwest corner of the palace lies a theater, with nearby ruins of royal villas and tombs. Crete is home to numerous other historical sites, adding to the island's infinite charm.

Crete is densely forested, and its eastern plains are suitable for farming, with agriculture focusing on the cultivation of grains, olives, and grapes. Beyond food, olive oil and wine were major products; palaces were specifically equipped with storage rooms containing giant jars to store oil and wine. These storerooms were often connected in rows, with thousands of jars, illustrating the importance of oil and wine in agricultural production and daily life. Other major achievements in Crete's economic development included industry, commerce, and maritime trade. Its handcrafted products were known for their exquisite beauty, with copper, gold, and silver daily items and artifacts being particularly refined. Pottery was especially outstanding; the Kamares ware produced during the Old Palace period, with its delicate, elegant, and graceful painted designs, is recognized as the finest pottery of the ancient world. Its shipbuilding industry was also highly developed, with merchant ships traveling throughout the Mediterranean. Unlike other ancient civilizations that prioritized defensive architecture, Crete's cities and palaces were not built with thick walls or high ramparts. Crete traded its agricultural and industrial products extensively across the Mediterranean, with particularly close ties to Egypt. From the beginning, Crete established the palace as its political center with strong royal authority, which is a major difference from the republican city-state system later adopted by Greece.

Later, the Minoan dynasty of Knossos not only ruled Crete but also included the Cyclades and many colonies in the Aegean Sea and Asia Minor, with its influence extending to Miletus in Asia Minor, Mycenae, Athens, and Thebes in mainland Greece, and parts of Italy. Furthermore, ties between Crete and Egypt grew closer, likely establishing friendly relations and more frequent commercial exchanges. The development of overseas commerce and a powerful navy allowed the Minoan dynasty to establish maritime hegemony, which was later celebrated by the Greeks.

The palace is the greatest creation of Cretan civilization. It was not only the political, religious, and cultural center of the Minoan dynasty but also its economic hub, housing numerous storerooms, workshops, offices for economic archives, and tax collection agencies. The final palace completed during the New Palace period was a multi-story building complex surrounding a central courtyard, covering an area of 22,000 square meters. The palace contained over 1,500 halls and rooms, with densely packed floors, complex and winding staircases and corridors, scattered halls, and numerous light wells. The layout was asymmetrical and ingeniously designed, making it difficult for outsiders to navigate, which is why it was dubbed the "Labyrinth" in ancient Greek mythology.

The famous ruins of the Palace of Knossos are located just a few kilometers from the city of Heraklion, and the excavation of this palace has made Heraklion world-famous. In Greek mythology, there was a monarch named Minos who dominated the Aegean Sea with a powerful navy and built the magnificent Palace of Knossos, thus unveiling the brilliant Cretan civilization.

Today, the palace ruins have been fully excavated and partially restored. The overall architecture is rectangular. Following the custom of Minoan palaces, there are no surrounding walls or watchtowers. The entire palace is centered on a rectangular central courtyard (60 meters long and 30 meters wide) and is built against the mountain. The terrain is higher in the west and lower in the east; therefore, the buildings to the west of the courtyard have two or three stories, while those to the east have four or five. Viewed from the eastern foothills, the palace appears as a towering structure with staggered doors, windows, and open corridors, a landscape rare among ancient palaces. The buildings to the west of the courtyard were mainly used for office meetings, religious rituals, and storing valuables, while the eastern buildings served as royal chambers, living rooms, schools, and workshops. All floors and areas are connected by stairs, with the grand central staircase to the east of the courtyard being the most magnificent. It features a light well, is flanked by colonnades on three sides, and has wide, colorfully painted steps, making it the most outstanding monument of palace architecture. The adjacent Hall of the Double Axes is divided into inner and outer chambers separated by folding doors, which could keep the space warm in winter and ventilated in summer, demonstrating the ingenuity of Minoan architecture. The Queen's chambers next to the hall are a typical example of luxurious Minoan housing, with walls adorned with frescoes of dolphins playing in the water, elegant and graceful. The connected small room includes a bathroom and a flush toilet; such sanitary facilities were unique in ancient times. Similar to the high level of architecture, the frescoes throughout the palace are masterpieces of ancient art, showcasing the Cretan civilization's focus on elegance and delicacy, distinct from the solemn and heavy style of Eastern nations.

Around 1450 BC, Greek-speaking people occupied the Palace of Knossos, marking the decline of Cretan civilization. From then on, the center of Aegean civilization shifted to the Mycenaean region of mainland Greece.
