Those immigrating to Spain through investment should understand the following about Spain:
1. The Spanish are a patriotic people; jokes about the King and the country should be avoided. Similarly, it is not recommended to ask local Spanish residents if they are from the Basque Country or Catalonia.
2. There are general norms in developed tourist areas; for example, on the streets of Torremolinos, public drunkenness and swearing in any language are considered offensive. Friends and family kiss each other on the cheeks, but a firm handshake is very appropriate for Spanish men greeting male friends.
3. Nude bathing is permitted on Spanish beaches, but full nudity should only be practiced in areas specifically designated as allowing it.
4. Do not make, and try to avoid, potentially offensive religious comments, especially during Holy Week and Christmas.
5. As in most parts of the world today, dining in Spain is standard and informal, but basic table etiquette should be followed even in tourist areas. If you happen to be dining with locals at a restaurant, you should wait until everyone is seated before you begin eating, and similarly, you should only leave the table once everyone has finished their meal. Tipping in Spain is not mandatory, as most Spanish restaurant bills include a service charge. That said, it is common for diners to leave a tip for good service and quality, but this does not mean you are obligated to tip at American-style percentages.
