The Canadian government has decided to introduce new automobile exhaust emission standards, which are essentially the same as the emission standards in the United States.
Canadian Environment Minister Peter Kent stated: “Canada will adopt the same stringent new emission standards as the United States, specifically the Tier 3 exhaust emission standards.” The Tier 3 exhaust emission standards apply to all passenger cars and light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and small vans) equipped with gasoline engines sold in Canada. Additionally, compared to the current Tier 2 exhaust emission standards, the new standards require a reduction of approximately 80% in harmful gas emissions from vehicles.
Environment Minister Peter Kent remarked: “This is a necessary decision by the Canadian government to ensure air quality now and in the future.” At the same time, Toyota also issued a statement expressing its willingness to support this policy of the Canadian government. Toyota President and CEO Akio Toyoda stated: “Toyota will achieve global requirements in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions through technological innovation. We are proud that the Toyota hybrid vehicle Lexus RX has officially gone into production at our Ontario plant. In 2014, Toyota will become the first automaker in Canada to produce gasoline vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles simultaneously.”
