Canadian Immigration essentials regarding Canadian Education: Immigrants to Canada with children currently in high school should take note that authoritative Canadian institutions have released the latest 2014 Canadian university rankings. In this report, the University of Victoria has surpassed Simon Fraser University to take the top spot in the comprehensive university category. McGill University and Mount Allison University have once again secured the top positions in the medical-doctoral and primarily undergraduate categories, respectively.

Canadian immigration experts explain that this ranking is compiled by Canada's largest national news magazine based on surveys conducted at each institution. The evaluation categorizes schools into three types: Medical-doctoral universities focus on providing a wide range of doctoral programs and research, all feature medical schools, and are ranked based on the amount of research funding; comprehensive universities focus primarily on undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degree programs; and primarily undergraduate universities focus on undergraduate education, with graduate education not being a primary emphasis, hence they are also known as "undergraduate universities."
According to this latest ranking, the top three medical-doctoral universities in Canada are currently McGill University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Toronto; the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Waterloo firmly hold the top three spots among comprehensive universities; among primarily undergraduate universities, Mount Allison University, Acadia University, the University of Northern British Columbia, and the University of Lethbridge make up the top three, with the third place shared by two institutions.
Canadian immigration experts state that, unlike other countries, Canada does not have an official university ranking standard. It is recommended that Canadian immigrants and students do not blindly rely on rankings, but rather choose the school and major that best suit their own characteristics and future development plans.
