National Flag
The national flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was adopted on September 19, 1983. The flag is rectangular with a length-to-width ratio of 3:2. The upper left and lower right corners feature two equal, symmetrical triangles; the upper left is green, and the lower right is red. A broad black diagonal band with yellow edges runs from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. Green symbolizes the lush land and various crops, red symbolizes the rebirth of the nation after independence, yellow symbolizes the sun, and black symbolizes the predominantly black population of the island nation. The two white five-pointed stars represent the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Saint Kitts and Nevis was adopted in 1983. It features a sailing ship, commemorating Christopher Columbus's discovery of the island of Saint Kitts. On the blue field above, there is a yellow fleur-de-lis, the head of a European woman, and a white rose with a red center, symbolizing the federation's traditional ties with France and the United Kingdom, while the blue represents the ocean. The two red flowers on the white field and the red triangular band symbolize the coalition government formed by the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis. At the top of the coat of arms is a helmet adorned with a yellow and black wreath, topped with a red torch held high by three arms, bright and fervent, symbolizing the various ethnic groups of the federation holding high the torch of freedom and moving forward together. On the yellow ribbon at the base of the coat of arms, the motto "Country Above Self" is written in English. On both sides of the coat of arms are a white bird, a coconut tree, and sugarcane, symbolizing the rich natural resources.
