Follow Portugal Immigration and Portugal Education: The University of Lisbon is one of the largest comprehensive universities in Portugal with the highest number of enrolled students. The exact date of the university's founding remains a subject of debate. In 1290, King Dinis of Portugal founded the first higher education institution in Lisbon, known as the University of Portugal. Between 1308, when the university moved to Coimbra, and 1537, when it finally settled in Coimbra, the institution relocated between Lisbon and Coimbra five times. Consequently, both the University of Lisbon and the University of Coimbra consider the original University of Portugal to be their predecessor. However, it is generally accepted that the University of Lisbon was established in 1911 by merging four existing specialized schools and adding several new faculties.
The University of Lisbon currently has eight faculties: Arts, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Natural Sciences, Education and Psychology, Fine Arts, and Dental Medicine. In addition, there are four graduate schools—Ophthalmology, Bacteriology, and Medicine—as well as the Dom Luiz Institute of Geophysics and the Institute of Social Sciences. The university has over 18,000 registered students and 1,644 faculty members. Law and Medicine are among the university's strongest disciplines. The University of Lisbon is the most important teaching and research center in Portugal.
The University of Lisbon has established inter-university cooperation agreements with prestigious universities across Europe and the United States. Several groups of Chinese students have studied at the university, and Chinese visiting professors have also taught there.
The New University of Lisbon (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) comprises nine faculties: Science and Technology, Social and Human Sciences, Medicine, Economics, Law, Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Chemical and Biological Technology, Information Management and Statistics, and Public Health.
