The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) was established in October 1983 and is headquartered in Saint Kitts and Nevis. It serves as the monetary authority for eight island nations in the Eastern Caribbean and acts as their central bank. These eight member countries are Anguilla (non-independent), Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (all OECS member countries except the British Virgin Islands).
The functions of the ECCB include issuing a single currency for circulation across these eight member countries - the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC), managing foreign exchange reserves, implementing central banking functions, regulating monetary credit policies, promoting and maintaining monetary stability, improving credit and exchange conditions, and facilitating financial structures that contribute to the economic development of member countries. Its executive bodies are the Monetary Council and the Board of Directors. The Monetary Council is the highest decision-making body, composed of one minister appointed by each member country, and its function is to provide guidance on monetary and credit policy for the bank. The Board of Directors consists of ten directors, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and one director appointed by each of the eight member countries. The Board is responsible for the bank's policies and general administration, with the Governor serving as the Chief Executive Officer, responsible for the day-to-day management of the bank.
