When in Rome, do as the Romans do. To live comfortably and at ease in a new country, it is essential to understand local regulations. Below, we introduce some important points you must know about driving in Cyprus after immigrating to Cyprus.

Do you know the driving rules in Cyprus?

Road Tax

In Cyprus, road tax is also known as circulation fees and is paid to the Department of Road Transport annually between January and December. It is usually paid in full, and the rate depends on the size of the vehicle's engine; the larger the engine, the higher the tax rate. The vehicle road tax registration certificate must be displayed on the car windshield.

1. Payments can be made at partner banks by bringing the vehicle registration documents.

2. Department of Road Transport at 17 Vasileos PAVLOU 1425 Engomi

Speed Limits

1. The speed limit on highways is 100 km/h.

2. Regional roads: 80 km/h, unless otherwise stated.

3. Built-up areas (towns, villages): 50 km/h, unless otherwise stated.

4. Speeding offenders will be subject to fines.

Police will check vehicle speeds. Some traffic cameras are now operational in Cyprus, mainly installed at traffic lights to catch those running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, or not wearing seat belts, etc. More will be introduced over time. The police also use mobile cameras to check for speeding.

Parking

1. Municipal and private parking spaces and garages are widely used. There are also paid parking lots in city centers. (Usually, no fees are charged on Saturday afternoons, Sundays, or public holidays).

2. Parking or waiting on double yellow lines is illegal.

3. You may make a brief stop on a single yellow line to load or unload (though parking is prohibited).

Gasoline and Fuel

1. All gas stations sell high-quality (Super 95) unleaded gasoline and diesel.

2. Gasoline is measured in liters.

3. Many gas stations in cities and coastal areas use self-service machines, where payment is made via credit card or banknotes. These are usually open 24 hours a day.

4. On the island and in inland rural areas, gasoline or diesel may not be available on weekends or public holidays.

Note: Many rural gas stations may be closed in August.

Traffic Offenses and Penalties

If a traffic offense is committed, a fixed penalty notice and a fine will be issued to the offender. If the offender does not accept the fine, the court will issue a summons, and the penalty will be combined with penalty points. When the accumulated penalty points reach 12, the court has the authority to disqualify the offender from driving. Once the disqualification is lifted, the offender may drive again; however, the penalty points will remain on record for three years.

Accidents and Breakdowns

To guard against accidents or breakdowns, it is recommended to carry a wireless/mobile phone.
