The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released a significant piece of good news! Starting from October 3, 2024, applicants who have submitted permanent residency applications through the Start-Up Visa (SUV) program are eligible to apply for an open work permit. The main details are as follows:
The validity of the work permit is three years;
Applicants can serve their business projects in the capacity of entrepreneurs;
Applicants can also work for any employer in Canada to support the income of the work permit holder in Canada.
Starting from October 3, 2024, SUV applicants will be allowed to apply for an open work permit for up to three years, rather than being restricted to a one-year closed work permit that only allows them to work for their start-up company. These measures indicate that SUV applicants have the opportunity to earn additional income from work outside their start-up company, alleviating the financial pressure on themselves and their families in Canada.
Applicants eligible to submit for an open work permit
must meet the following conditions:
◆ Have submitted a permanent residency application through the SUV program
◆ The applicant's permanent residency application has received an AOR (acknowledgement of receipt) letter, meaning they have been assigned a formal file number.
◆ Be an essential team member of the business management team in the SUV project
◆ Intend to reside in provinces or territories outside of Quebec
◆ Demonstrate that the business project will bring significant economic benefits to Canada. The so-called "benefits" refer to: creating job opportunities, technological and service innovations, promoting economic development in remote communities; providing more training for Canadians.
◆ Meet the minimum funding requirements for family members' living expenses
◆ Have sufficient funds to operate the invested business project
Moreover, eligible spouses or common-law partners can also apply for an open work permit, and children can apply for study permits, undoubtedly providing more comprehensive support for the entire family. The SUV Start-Up Visa program, as a federal immigration pathway in Canada, previously only allowed applicants to apply for closed work permits. This meant that applicants could only work for designated employers, which imposed more restrictions. The introduction of the open work permit policy undoubtedly gives applicants more choices and freedom.
If you are considering immigrating to Canada through the SUV, now is an excellent time. Seize this opportunity to fulfill both your entrepreneurial and immigration dreams!
The Start-Up Visa (SUV) program is the only "group" immigration program, allowing a maximum of five applicants to immigrate through one entrepreneurial project, and this program is managed by the federal government of Canada, receiving strong support from the federal government, with direct federal processing. Successful SUV applicants can bring their spouses and dependent children under 22 years of age to directly apply for permanent residency, allowing them to live, work, and study in Canada, except in Quebec. More importantly, the permanent residency status obtained by entrepreneurs will not be revoked due to business failure! The application requirements for this program are simple, with no asset requirements, no need to prove the source of assets, and no management experience required; applicants only need to achieve a CLB5 in language proficiency and can submit their applications upon meeting the relevant conditions.
