For new immigrants to the United States, the first landing is very important, and it is essential to be well prepared. In addition to preparing for life and mentally before landing, there are also some documents that must be possessed for landing in the United States. Here, WorldWay Immigration shares some key points for new immigrants landing, hoping to assist everyone in successfully entering the United States.
Important Notes Before Entry
1. The principal applicant must be the first to land as an immigrant; accompanying applicants cannot land before the principal applicant.
2. Before new immigrants first land in the United States, applicants need to pay the green card processing fee online and keep the receipt number (usually starting with IOE), which can be used to check the green card processing status later.
3. Most airlines allow the free check-in of 2 pieces of luggage under 23 kilograms each and 1 piece of carry-on luggage.
4. Each family must truthfully complete the U.S. Customs Declaration Form (I-94) if carrying over $10,000 in cash or equivalent traveler's checks.
Documents to Prepare Before Landing
1. Passport
2. Landing package (to be collected from China CITIC Bank after the consulate interview; do not open)
3. Vaccination record (please present this during customs inspection)
4. Yellow vaccination booklet
Please carry all of the above on board and do not check them in.
At Entry
For many new immigrants, the requirement to fill out a series of English forms and answer questions from customs officials is the first challenge upon entering U.S. territory. It is crucial that all comply with U.S. government regulations and respond truthfully and objectively.
Process Upon Arriving at a U.S. Airport:
1. Join the Traveler/Visitor queue for entry inspection;
2. At the "New Immigrant Reporting" section, present your passport, immigration package, and customs declaration form to the immigration officer;
3. Answer questions from the immigration officer calmly, provide fingerprints, and have your photo taken on-site;
4. Organize your carry-on items and go to the Baggage Claim area to collect your checked luggage;
5. After retrieving your luggage, queue for customs inspection;
6. Successfully clear customs.
Additionally, once green card applicants obtain U.S. immigrant visas and land in the United States, they officially become U.S. tax residents and must file personal income tax returns annually. Investors should also prepare for tax planning in advance. Each green card holder should not be away from the U.S. for more than 181 days; this means they need to return to the U.S. at least once every six months.
After successfully landing in the United States, to better integrate into the new environment, there are many small tasks that need to be completed, such as opening a bank account and obtaining a card, obtaining a driver's license, purchasing health insurance, applying for a Social Security Number, etc.
