Recently, the Canadian Minister of Employment announced that the federal government will extend Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits from 15 weeks to 26 weeks.

EI sickness benefits allow claimants to receive 55% of their earnings weekly, up to a maximum of 638 Canadian dollars. Starting December 18, those applying for EI will be eligible for more generous benefits, equivalent to 11 additional weeks of benefits or an extra 7,018 dollars. The maximum amount payable will increase from 9,570 Canadian dollars to 16,588 Canadian dollars!

In 2019-2020, EI sickness benefits provided 1.9 billion Canadian dollars in support to approximately 421,140 applicants. In the same year, 34% of recipients exhausted their full 15-week entitlement. In 2020-2021, the Government of Canada provided nearly 2 billion Canadian dollars in EI sickness benefits to over 450,000 applicants.
What is Employment Insurance?
Employment Insurance is an important benefit provided by the Canadian government to those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. In British Columbia, when you are laid off or are capable of working but cannot find a job, the Service Canada online application can help you receive benefits while you actively look for work. Additionally, there are several types of EI benefits, such as sickness, maternity, caregiving, self-employed, and overseas living benefits.
Regular Employment Insurance is the most common type. The government provides EI to workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, which may be due to seasonal or mass layoffs, labor market shortages, previous workplace closures, or if you have skills but cannot find work.
Claimants for EI sickness benefits need to prove the following to be eligible:
* Unable to work for medical reasons;
* Their normal weekly earnings have been reduced by more than 40% for at least one week;
* Have accumulated at least 600 hours of insurable employment in the 52 weeks before the start of the claim or since the last claim (whichever is shorter);
* They would have been working if not for their medical condition. When applying, a signed medical certificate is also required. The physician issuing the certificate must be licensed to practice in Canada or the United States. They can be a doctor, chiropractor, optometrist, psychologist, dentist, midwife (except in PEI), nurse practitioner, or registered nurse.
This time, the federal government's extension of EI sickness benefits from 15 weeks to 26 weeks once again confirms that Canada is a high-welfare country that consistently provides tangible benefits to citizens in need.
