Recently, the Greek Parliament and government agreed to extend the validity of the Greek passport from 5 years to 10 years starting from September 1, 2022. Previously, the Greek Minister of Citizen Protection stated that Greek embassies around the world have announced this plan, allowing Greek citizens residing abroad to obtain passports with a validity period that is double the current one. He stated: "Greece is one of the few countries in the European Union and the world with a passport validity of only five years. Extending the validity to ten years will save the government a significant amount of financial and administrative expenses."
The Greek Embassy in Ljubljana has informed the public that starting from September 1, 2022, the validity of ordinary Greek passports for all Greek citizens aged 14 and above will be extended from 5 years (currently applicable to adults) to 10 years. The bill also states that children under 14 will receive passports with a validity of three years. Meanwhile, until August 31, passports with the same validity as currently (5 years) will continue to be issued.
The cost of obtaining a Greek passport with a validity of 10 years will remain unchanged, with an application fee of 85 euros per new passport. This means that obtaining a Greek passport will become cheaper, as passport holders will only need to pay 85 euros for ten years instead of 170 euros (paying 85 euros every five years).
