Recently, the Irish Department of Education announced a new policy: starting from the 2022 Leaving Certificate, Chinese will be officially included as a subject. This means that in 2022, Ireland will hold its first Chinese language examination, with the results counting towards the total Leaving Certificate score. This is excellent news for both Chinese children who move to Ireland for primary or secondary education after investment migration, and for ethnic Chinese youth born and raised in Ireland, as it provides a significant advantage in the Irish Leaving Certificate, leveraging their native language proficiency!
In fact, Chinese has been listed as an optional foreign language subject for the Irish Leaving Certificate since 2020, and starting in 2022, it will become one of the official subjects! Richard Bruton, the Minister for Education and Skills, stated that including Chinese in the Leaving Certificate is intended to improve the foreign language proficiency and diversity of Irish students, positioning Ireland at the forefront of European countries in foreign language education.
The Irish Leaving Certificate is also known as the high school graduation qualification exam. It serves as the final examination for secondary school in Ireland and as the university entrance examination, equivalent to the "Gaokao" in China. The Irish Leaving Certificate does not limit the number of subjects a student can take; in other words, Irish high school students can choose to study as many subjects as they wish. They can also choose to sit for multiple subjects during the exam. However, the total score for the Leaving Certificate is calculated based on the student's six highest-scoring subjects.
Starting from the 2022 exam, Chinese will be added to the elective subjects for the Irish Leaving Certificate, which is good news for children who already have a foundation in the language. The Chinese curriculum in Irish high schools will be divided into two levels: Ordinary Level and Higher Level. The examination format consists of both an oral test and a written test. Each part will be administered and assessed by the State Examinations Commission (SEC).
The Irish education system is very similar to the Chinese system, consisting of 6 years of primary school, 3 years of junior high school, and 2-3 years of high school, allowing Chinese students to transfer directly into the system. The only difference is that Ireland offers a Transition Year Programme between junior high and high school. Students can choose whether or not to participate in this year, and there is no exam pressure during this period. From this perspective, Irish students have greater freedom to choose a path of growth that suits them.
In recent years, Ireland's economy has developed rapidly, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Another remarkable feature is its education; Ireland's excellent educational standards make it one of the countries with the highest rates of educational attainment globally. Furthermore, Ireland is very welcoming to immigrants. Because of this, Irish investment migration has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Currently, to immigrate to Ireland through investment, one can apply for residency for the whole family by donating 500,000 euros to a project recognized by the Irish government (group donations can be discounted to 400,000 euros). Alternatively, one can immigrate to Ireland by investing 1 million euros in a local Irish enterprise for at least three years.
