Recently, the Canadian federal government held a press conference to announce the border reopening plan: starting from 12:01 AM on August 9, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to enter Canada; starting from September 7, travelers from all other countries who have been vaccinated will also be allowed to enter Canada without quarantine.
Proof of vaccination is required for entry
Foreign adults entering Canada must provide documents in English or French proving that they have been fully vaccinated with vaccines approved for use in Canada. This means receiving two doses of Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca at least 14 days prior to arrival, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
At the same time, all travelers must use the government’s ArriveCAN to submit information, and if they meet the government’s criteria, they will not need to quarantine upon arrival in Canada. Those who provide false information on ArriveCAN will face fines of up to CAD 750,000 or six months in prison.
New regulations will take effect from August 9
1. Children under 12 who are not yet eligible for vaccination will be exempt from quarantine requirements upon entering Canada and may travel with their fully vaccinated parents, provided they adhere to the relevant public health guidelines of the area they are visiting.
2. Starting August 9, the number of airports in Canada accepting international flights will increase from four to nine. In addition to Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Calgary International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport, international airports in Quebec, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Halifax will also accept international travelers.
3. Starting August 9, Canada will lift the requirement for unvaccinated travelers to quarantine in designated hotels for three days upon entering Canada, but they will still be required to provide a suitable quarantine plan.
4. Starting August 9, Canada will implement a new monitoring program at airports and land border crossings. Fully vaccinated travelers will not need to be tested upon arrival unless randomly selected for COVID-19 testing.
Regarding the reopening of borders, Trudeau emphasized that the safety of Canadians remains a top priority. On the other hand, as the pandemic gradually eases around the world, reopening the borders is significant for revitalizing the tourism industry in Canada. At the same time, with the gradual reopening of Canada’s borders, there will be a peak period for applicants from abroad, which will also support the million immigration plan and continuously strengthen the intake of new immigrants.
