According to public data released by the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC), as of June 2021, Ontario universities received 706,119 applications this year, including over 470,000 from local students and over 220,000 from international students. This represents an overall increase of 28,655 applications compared to last year.
Data shows that as of June 2021, Ontario universities received a total of 228,874 international student applications. Based on the number of applications received by different universities, the top 5 most popular Ontario universities for international students in 2021 are: University of Toronto (50,940 applications); University of Ottawa (27,394 applications); University of Waterloo (21,794 applications); McMaster University (20,019 applications); and Western University (18,024 applications). These are followed by Ryerson University (17,512 applications), York University (17,233 applications), and Queen's University (16,841 applications).
The most popular universities for local students differ slightly, with the top 5 being: University of Toronto (55,984 applications), Ryerson University (49,108 applications), McMaster University (48,309 applications), York University (44,569 applications), and Western University (44,349 applications).
From this data, it is evident that the University of Toronto ranks first in the number of applications from both international and local students, making it the undisputed most popular university. Furthermore, to date, the University of Toronto has confirmed the admission of 8,218 international student applications, an increase of 1,545 compared to the same period last year, representing a 23.2% expansion in the intake of new international students. Meanwhile, admissions for local students have also increased by 9.9%.
At the same time, the University of Toronto is highly favored by Chinese students. Data shows that at the University of Toronto, the number and proportion of Chinese international students far exceed those from other countries. Among them, Chinese international undergraduate students account for 64.9%, and Chinese international graduate students account for 42.9%.
