Recently, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) economist Andrew Agopsowicz provided a new forecast analysis on Canada's 2021 immigration trends. The results indicate that Canada may fail to meet its immigration targets this year, with an optimistic projection of welcoming at most 275,000 people. Compared to the immigration plan of 401,000 new immigrants, the shortfall will be as high as 126,000!
This economist previously made a forecast for Canada's total immigration numbers for 2020 in May of last year, and the analysis results were largely consistent with the facts. Due to the dual impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, the number of new immigrants accepted by Canada in 2020 was far lower than expected. He stated: "We will see a 'short-term shock' from current restrictions, but it is important to focus on adjusting our immigration system in the long term to adapt to the impacts brought by COVID-19, as new immigrants are crucial to Canada's fiscal stability."
To make up for the immigration shortfall and restore the economy, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino released a 3-year immigration plan on October 30, 2020, to accept 1.233 million new immigrants over the next 3 years: 401,000 in 2021; 411,000 in 2022; and 421,000 in 2023.
Although, according to the RBC economist's forecast, a massive immigration shortfall will likely recur in 2021, for applicants who wish to immigrate to Canada, this may be an opportunity. In the post-pandemic era, Canada will inevitably find ways to fill the gap for the sake of economic recovery.
The Canadian immigration department has recently launched frequent favorable immigration policies, such as lowering immigration thresholds for in-country applicants, restoring valid status for those whose status has been expired for more than 180 days, issuing new work permits to international students whose post-graduation work permits are about to expire, and reopening immigration occupations that were restricted due to the pandemic. In fact, in the year of the pandemic, Canada lived up to its name as the "Land of the Maple Leaf." In addition to continuously adjusting immigration visa policies, relaxing audit conditions, and addressing the practical difficulties of various groups, the Canadian immigration department has successively released a number of major favorable policies!
Canada, which has always opened its doors to welcome immigrants, may step up its efforts in 2021 to achieve its million-immigrant goal, providing sufficient policies to attract more people to immigrate to Canada. It is expected that the number of new immigrants to Canada will continue to rise rapidly in the coming months. Taking advantage of the current relatively low immigration threshold is the best opportunity to apply for a Permanent Resident Card!
