Recently, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a think tank under the UK's The Economist Group, released its 2020 Global Democracy Index ranking. Canada ranked 5th globally in terms of democracy, classified as a "full democracy" nation.

This democracy index ranking categorizes the democratic status of countries worldwide into four distinct levels: "full democracy," "flawed democracy," "hybrid regime," and "authoritarian." The democracy index is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. Based on the scores of each country across these categories, they are classified into one of the four regime types. The report ranked 165 countries and regions globally, with a maximum score of 10.0. Canada ranked 5th with a total score of 9.24.
The report states that the democracy index deteriorated significantly in 2020, largely due to government restrictions on individual and civil liberties in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Economist described the state of global democracy in 2020 as "very poor," with the global democracy index hitting a 14-year low.
However, at a time when the global democracy index is regressing, it is pleasantly surprising that Canada remains rated as one of the most democratic countries in the world, with both its index and ranking improving compared to previous years! Canada's average score increased from 9.22 in 2019 to 9.24 in 2020, and its ranking rose from eighth to fifth! The report notes that Canada's change in ranking makes it the "best-performing country in North America." In fact, since the first edition of the Democracy Index was released in 2006, Canada has consistently been the most democratic country in North America.
As is well known, over the past year, Canada has performed excellently in various world rankings. Whether in the "Democracy Index," "Quality of Education," "Safety Index," or "Passport Power," Canada consistently ranks at the top! At the same time, Canada maintains an open-arms attitude toward accepting new immigrants. Canadian Immigration Minister Mendicino once stated at a press conference: Immigrants play a vital role in Canada's population and economic growth, and we firmly believe that immigration is key to helping Canada's short-term economic recovery and long-term economic prosperity!

The friendliness of a country toward new immigrant groups is often an important consideration for applicants. In the Global Migrant Acceptance Index report released by Gallup, Canada was ranked as the number one most welcoming country for new immigrants in the world by an absolute margin! It can be said that Canada in the post-pandemic era may be even more attractive!
