Eligible residents from Hong Kong can obtain work permits for up to 3 years
Canada will provide fast and open work permits for youth from Hong Kong who have graduated from post-secondary educational institutions (regardless of the country) within the past five years, with a maximum validity of 3 years, and will offer opportunities for eligible spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children to apply for study or work permits.
Two new immigration pathways for residents of Hong Kong
For residents of Hong Kong who have worked in Canada for more than one year, they will be eligible to apply for permanent residency (PR) directly, with only lower language/education requirements needed for application; for residents of Hong Kong who have completed their studies in Canada, they will also be eligible to apply for PR directly. In both pathways, the qualified spouse or common-law partner and dependent children of the principal applicant can accompany them.
In addition, Canada will expedite the review process, providing visas for eligible youth from Hong Kong who wish to work or study in Canada. At the same time, it will temporarily waive all visa fees for current residents of Hong Kong in Canada.
The immigration department also added that Canada will benefit from these new measures, ensuring that these residents from Hong Kong possess good skills and education levels, integrate into society, and contribute to the Canadian economy. Canada will also increase recruitment efforts to attract more young people from Hong Kong to Canada.
Recently, Canada announced plans to make it easier for over 1 million international students, workers, and asylum seekers currently residing in the country to become permanent residents. The new plan encouraging graduates and work permit holders from Hong Kong to immigrate to Canada is also based on the immigration targets for 2021-2023, encouraging more young people from Hong Kong to choose Canada as a place to study, work, and settle.
