In a morning press conference on June 8, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will ease border restrictions to allow the immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to enter the country.
The Canada Border Services Agency stated that this exemption policy will take effect at 23:59 Eastern Time on June 8, and the policy applies to foreign nationals as well. As long as individuals can prove they are immediate family members of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, have no symptoms of COVID-19 or "no reason to believe they have contracted COVID-19," and intend to stay with their immediate family member for at least 15 days, they may enter Canada.
The five categories of immediate family members eligible for this exemption include:
1. A spouse or common-law partner;
2. A dependent child, as defined in section 2 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, or a dependent child of a spouse or common-law partner;
3. A person who provides care for a dependent child mentioned in (2.) above, as defined in section 2 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations;
4. A parent or step-parent of a spouse or common-law partner;
5. A guardian or tutor.

Trudeau said: "Being separated from a spouse, a child, a mom or a dad is a very difficult time. We have heard the voices of these people. There is no doubt that the past few months have been harder than anyone expected. This pandemic has brought different challenges to everyone, but no matter who you are or what you are facing, government assistance can make all the difference."
In addition, Trudeau stated: "Anyone entering Canada must be quarantined for 14 days. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in severe penalties."
Furthermore, the official website of Air Canada shows that starting July 1, Air Canada will resume flights to and from China. The direct flight from Toronto to Shanghai will resume on the same day, with a planned frequency of three flights per week.
