Education has always been a topic of concern for parents in China, and it is the wish of many to see their children attend prestigious universities and receive a better education. Known as the "Green Channel for the Gaokao" and the "Express Train to Prestigious Universities," the Joint Entrance Exam for Overseas Chinese Students is highly regarded by domestic parents due to its smaller scope of exam questions, lower difficulty, lower admission score requirements, and diverse career paths. More and more parents are planning ahead to provide their children with the status of an overseas Chinese student, allowing them to board this "express train" to university. So, do you know how overseas Chinese students are defined? Are you aware of the application requirements? Let's take a look below.
Latest (2019) Definition of Overseas Chinese Students and Ministry of Education Eligibility Criteria:
According to the "2019 Prospectus for the Joint Recruitment of Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students by Regular Higher Education Institutions of the People's Republic of China" published by the National Joint Recruitment Office, the definition of overseas Chinese students and the Ministry of Education's eligibility criteria are as follows:
For overseas Chinese candidates, both the candidate and one of their parents must have obtained long-term or permanent residency in the country of residence and have resided there continuously for 2 years, with a cumulative stay of no less than 18 months within those 2 years. The candidate themselves must have actually resided in the country of residence for a cumulative total of no less than 18 months within the 2 years prior to registration.
If the candidate or one of their parents has not obtained long-term or permanent residency in the country of residence, but has obtained legal residency status in the country of residence for 5 consecutive years or more (including 5 years), with a cumulative stay of no less than 30 months within those 5 years, and the candidate themselves has actually resided in the country of residence for a cumulative total of no less than 30 months within the 5 years prior to registration, they may also apply. Chinese citizens studying abroad (including those on government-sponsored or self-funded programs) or working abroad for official business (including dispatched labor personnel) are not considered overseas Chinese.
Documents required for registration as an overseas Chinese student:
1. Proof of legal relationship with the parent who holds overseas Chinese status (if both parents of the candidate are deceased, relevant legal documents such as proof of the parents' overseas Chinese status and death certificates must be provided);
2. A certificate of long-term or permanent residency in a foreign country for the candidate and one parent, issued by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in that country (Chinese version, must specify the duration of continuous residence in the country of residence and the actual cumulative residence time within two years), or a certificate of legal residency status in the country of residence (Chinese version, must specify the continuous duration of legal residency status held by the candidate and one parent, and the actual cumulative residence time within 5 years);
3. Passport of the People's Republic of China. If residing in a country that has not yet established diplomatic relations with China, a residency certification processed by the embassy (consulate) of a third country that has diplomatic relations with both China and the country of residence, as well as a certificate issued by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in that third country (Chinese version, must specify the time when residency was obtained), must be presented.
As parents, while you cannot give your children good grades, you can choose a good platform for them and plan their future in advance. Giving your child the status of an overseas Chinese student, allowing them to easily pass the Joint Entrance Exam and enter a prestigious domestic university, might be a great choice! For example, through Greece's property investment immigration, by purchasing property starting from 250,000 Euros, the whole family of three generations can apply for permanent residency in Greece, planning your child's future in advance. In addition to Greece's property investment immigration, purchasing property in Portugal starting from 350,000 Euros is also a good choice. Investors who purchase real estate that is at least 30 years old, or real estate located in urban renewal areas and renovate it, with a total value exceeding 350,000 Euros, can apply for a Portuguese Golden Residence Permit for the whole family of three generations.
In fact, whether it is Greece's property investment immigration or Portugal's property purchase immigration, it is an investment with multiple returns. Not only can the whole family apply for residency in an EU country, allowing family members to enjoy an international European lifestyle at any time, but it can also provide children with the status of an overseas Chinese student, fulfilling their dream of easily entering a prestigious domestic university.
In the past two years, the registration requirements for the Joint Entrance Exam for Overseas Chinese Students have been constantly changing. Parents who intend to let their children enter prestigious domestic universities through this method should prioritize educational immigration, plan their status in advance, and benefit early.
