Recently, Radio Free Europe reported that the European Union has approved the initiation of negotiations with Montenegro regarding 'Chapter 8 - Competition,' which is the final chapter in Montenegro's accession talks. The Secretary's Office of the Montenegro government has confirmed this news through Radio Free Europe. Radio Free Europe has informed the Montenegro government that 'this proves that Montenegro has completed all necessary work in the area of EU accession, and this work has been recognized by the European Union. Now, it should be formally arranged by the EU member states and the European Commission to initiate intergovernmental negotiations on this chapter.'
Montenegro's EU Accession Process is Rapid
At the end of 2008, Montenegro officially applied for EU membership, obtained candidate status in December 2010, and officially launched accession negotiations in June 2012. As of May 2019, within the framework of EU accession, 32 negotiation chapters, including Chapters 23 and 24 related to legal matters, have been opened, leaving only 3 chapters yet to be opened. Currently, in just six months, all chapters for Montenegro's EU accession have been opened, demonstrating the rapid pace of Montenegro's EU integration.
Strong Support from Many EU Officials and Member States
Currently, Montenegro's EU accession has garnered broad support from officials of the European Union and EU member states, such as President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Palmer from the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Tonyino Picula, the European Parliament's Special Rapporteur for Montenegro, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat, and Gunther Krichbaum, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, who have publicly supported Montenegro on various occasions and in the media.
Full Support from the EU
According to a news release from the European Commission, in its 2016 assessment of EU accession, the Commission identified Montenegro as the most advantageous country among candidate nations in the accession negotiations. Additionally, the EU has provided approximately €507 million in development assistance to Montenegro, to support its development and reform efforts, enabling it to meet EU standards as quickly as possible. Furthermore, the European Commission has explicitly stated that Montenegro may join the EU by 2025.
