The Century Initiative, a national Canadian think tank, recently published a report stating that if Canada reaches a population of 100 million by 2100 and can provide appropriate support mechanisms for these individuals, it will become a prosperous, inclusive, and influential country with remarkable advantages and development potential.
The focus of this plan is to increase Canada's population to 100 million by 2100. The report states that this will be achieved through significant immigration. Research indicates that based on Canada's current population growth trends, including fertility rates and new immigrants, the population would only reach 49.7 million by 2100, with a disproportionately high percentage of elderly and non-productive citizens.
The report states that to achieve the 100 million population target, the populations of Canada's major cities would need to triple. Most importantly, the Canadian government should increase its current annual immigration quota of 350,000 to 400,000 next year. Then, it should increase the quota by 20,000 annually until 2026. By that time, Canada would be admitting immigrants equivalent to 1.25% of its population, which means welcoming over 500,000 new immigrants each year. The report also suggests strategies, emphasizing the need to promote the benefits of population growth through education and marketing campaigns to drive a surge in immigration.
In fact, since the Canadian immigration department announced its three-year plan for 1 million immigrants in 2018, Canada has once again become a globally recognized destination for immigration. According to Canada's "Million Immigration Plan," the immigration quota for 2019 was 330,800, 341,000 for 2020, and 350,000 for 2021, with a total of 1.0218 million immigrants to be admitted over the three-year period. By extension, if the Canadian government continues to keep its doors open to immigrants and consistently increases immigration figures, it is believed that Canada's future population will continue to grow.
Canada's demographic dividend will bring sustained and rapid growth to its economy, society, and other aspects. At the same time, Canada has a sound welfare system, high quality of life, high safety index, and strong social inclusivity. Furthermore, Canada is a country with high global educational standards, advanced educational philosophies, and a high proportion of GDP invested in the education sector. In the future, more people may choose to immigrate and relocate to Canada.
