Located in Central Europe, Austria is a relatively small country that is easily accessible by road trip. While its size will not overwhelm you, Austria is home to many incredible, must-see locations everywhere you look.
That said, with so many places to see, it is actually difficult to prioritize your travel destinations. This is why I would like to share some very cool places that I hope you will enjoy.
1. Vienna
We cannot simply think that all the best places to visit are limited to the capital, Vienna, just because we mention its name. This alone proves that Vienna is a destination worth exploring.
Over the years, I have visited Vienna many times, and I am deeply captivated by the city's relaxed atmosphere, ancient history, and the cool vibe it exudes. There is so much to do here; upon arrival, be sure to head to the old center, visit the Schönbrunn Palace, and attend a performance at the State Opera House. Afterward, head to the MuseumQuartier to delve into the treasures the city has to offer.
If that does not catch your attention, you can try a hot rod tour of Vienna. You will drive your own little car back and forth across the city... it is a lot of fun!
For a Sunday afternoon dinner, you can head to a Buschenschank experience, where you can taste the best wines and snacks from the Nussberg Hill vineyards. It is truly a treat.
For dinner, do not forget to visit Griechenbeisl, where famous historical figures have signed their names; to this day, you can still see the signatures of Wagner, Beethoven, and Mozart all over the ceiling.
If you are feeling extra adventurous, head to Gugumuck (in the suburbs of Vienna) for a six-course snail meal! A six-course meal made entirely of snails (including dessert). This is an experience not to be missed.
2. Hallstatt
Hallstatt often claims to be the oldest village in Austria, though I am not entirely sure if that is true. One thing is for certain: the scenery in Hallstatt is truly breathtaking!
Surrounded by alpine huts and small streets, Hallstatt is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected for future generations.
Now, getting to this town can be a bit of a hassle, especially since the train station is on the other side of the lake. That said, you can take a ferry for a day trip to stroll through the town—just remember not to miss the last boat back.
Upon arrival, wander through the small streets, relax in the central square, and enjoy the unique beauty of this place.
If you are in the area, you can also visit the nearby Dachstein Ice Caves, which are simply incredible. Please note that there are 600 steps to climb, so this is not for the faint of heart.
3. Hohenems
Located in the western part of the country, Hohenems is one of the best places in Austria if you are someone who loves to delve into the history of a place.
Now, one place you cannot miss is the 12th-century Alt-Ems Castle, which is perfect for a walk. Another place worth seeing is the Stadtpfarrkirche, or parish church, which dates back nearly 500 years. There are so many historical buildings for you to choose from.
Better yet, Hohenems is surrounded by those striking Austrian mountains. This means there are plenty of opportunities for skiing in winter or hiking along the trails during the hot summer months.
4. Wachau
When thinking of Austria, Wachau is one of those locations that might not immediately come to mind, but I feel it should be added to your itinerary. Only 90 minutes away from Vienna, it is a beautiful place filled with local vineyards, waterways, and historical castles.
Once you are here, set off along the Wachau World Heritage Trail and stop for a glass or two at places like the Spitz, Joching, and Holzapfel vineyards. After all, you have walked so much, you have earned it!
Additionally, you can enjoy delicious snacks and have a traditional Austrian lunch at Gasthof Goldenes Schiff (in Spitz).
5. Ehrwald
If you enjoy outdoor activities, Ehrwald, located in the beautiful Reutte region, is one of the best places to visit in Austria.
It sits on the border with Germany and is towered over by the incredible Zugspitze, which is the highest mountain in Germany.
Once you are here, be sure to hike the trails in the area. Then, go to Holzerstubn for the best beef goulash dumplings. It is a proper warming treat.
