Many people cannot distinguish the difference between a passport and a visa, and even confuse them as representing the same concept. In fact, a passport and a visa are two different concepts, but they are inseparable. What are the differences between a passport and a visa? What is the relationship between the two?
Passport (护照)
A passport is a legal document issued by a country to its citizens, certifying their nationality and identity, allowing them to enter and exit their home country and travel or reside abroad.
Visa (签证)
A visa is an entry permit granted by the country you are visiting, allowing you to enter that country. Visas can generally be applied for at the embassies or consulates of the foreign country in your home country.
The Relationship Between Passports and Visas:
A passport holder can only achieve the purpose of entering and exiting a country if they have obtained a visa on their passport. In other words, without a passport, a citizen cannot apply for a visa; without a visa, a passport holder cannot be allowed to enter a country (except for visa-exempt cases). People often mention passports and visas together, and there is another situation where visas are generally affixed to passports, meaning that visas correspond to passports, such as issuing official visas to holders of diplomatic passports, etc.
Differences Between Passports and Visas
1. A passport is a necessary document for going abroad, while a visa is not always required (some countries have visa exemptions);
2. The application locations are different (passports are applied for at the local exit and entry administration bureau, while visas are applied for at the consulate or embassy of the country you are visiting in China);
3. The validity periods are different (the validity period of a passport is generally 10 years, while the validity period of a visa can be as short as 1 month or as long as 1 year);
Passports and visas should be applied for separately. In China, passports should be applied for at the public security bureau's exit and entry administration department in the applicant's household registration location.
Chinese citizens applying for foreign visas for personal matters currently have three main avenues: first, applying directly to the foreign embassy or consulate in China; second, entrusting a Chinese travel agency or visa agency to apply to the foreign embassy or consulate in China; third, having relatives or friends abroad handle the application.
