Worldway Group has learned that the U.S. Department of State, citing the need to strengthen security screening, has begun requiring the vast majority of U.S. visa applicants to submit their personal social media account information. This new regulation has been in effect since May 31. Upon logging into the U.S. visa application website, it was discovered that a section of the application form requires applicants to list personal accounts used on 20 social media platforms over the past five years. According to the visa application page, applicants must submit their personal accounts on social media platforms such as Douban, Facebook, QQ Space, Sina Weibo, Tencent Weibo, Twitter, and Youku.
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States also confirmed the new U.S. visa regulations and issued a notice on its website on June 2, reminding Chinese citizens traveling to the U.S. to comply with relevant laws when applying for visas, to truthfully state their purpose of travel, to provide truthful application materials, and to refrain from engaging in activities inconsistent with their visa category after arriving in the U.S.
This new regulation is not aimed solely at Chinese citizens applying for U.S. visas, but is a global requirement. Given the broad scope of the affected population and the diverse nature of the screening content, this may be the largest-scale "extreme vetting" visa system ever implemented by the United States. According to estimates by the U.S. Department of State, this new regulation may affect approximately 710,000 immigrant visa applicants and 14 million non-immigrant visa applicants, including those traveling for tourism, study, business, and other purposes. Only certain diplomatic and official visa applicants are exempt from this new regulation.
A U.S. government official stated that applicants may indicate that they do not use social media, but those who lie will face "serious consequences."
