Regardless of whether U.S. immigration policies tighten or not, the status of the United States as a traditional major destination for immigrants is unquestionable, as evidenced by the continuous stream of overseas applicants seeking to immigrate to the U.S. Among overseas applicants for U.S. immigration, New York State and California are the primary settlement destinations chosen by Chinese immigrants. In particular, New York City in New York State, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, in addition to cities such as San Diego and San Jose in California.
I. Chinese Immigrants in the U.S.: Cities in New York State
New York State, located in the northeastern United States, is one of the most economically developed states in the U.S. It holds a leading position among all U.S. states in finance, commerce, industry, art, and fashion. Agriculture and manufacturing are the state's primary industries, and it is home to the largest city in the U.S., New York City, and the Port of New York. Major cities in New York State include: New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse, and the state capital, Albany.
New York City
Renowned as a world capital of culture and a shopping paradise, it also boasts a highly developed level of education. It is not only a world-class metropolis but also the city with the largest Chinese immigrant population in the U.S., as well as the most diverse city. There is more than one Chinatown in New York City; the bustling Manhattan Chinatown, Brooklyn Chinatown, and Flushing Chinatown all make one feel as if they are in an authentic Chinese world. Furthermore, New York is the primary choice for immigrants from all countries, with the number of people immigrating to New York exceeding that of Los Angeles and Miami.
II. Chinese Immigrants in the U.S.: Cities in California
Previously, we introduced the two most popular cities for Chinese immigrants in California: Los Angeles and San Francisco. The former is the second-largest city in the U.S. after New York City and firmly holds the top spot as the most suitable city for Chinese immigrants in the U.S.; the latter has been favored by overseas Chinese since the Gold Rush. In addition to these two cities, California also has cities like San Diego and San Jose, which are also major gathering places for U.S. immigrants.
San Diego
A coastal city in California on the Pacific Ocean, located at the extreme southwestern corner of the U.S. mainland, it is famous for its warm climate and numerous beaches. It is also the second-largest city in California and the eighth-largest in the U.S. Although the number of early Chinese immigrants to San Diego was small, it has grown rapidly in recent years, doubling in a decade. A few years ago, the U.S. Senate passed an apology for the Chinese Exclusion Act, which improved the political and social status of Chinese Americans.
In recent years, San Diego has attracted an increasing number of Chinese immigrants to invest and work here, making it a prime location for their lives and a top choice for settling down. Additionally, many people enjoy coming here for vacations; besides marine activities such as surfing, whale watching, swimming, and sailing, visiting nearby mountains and deserts is also an excellent outdoor activity.
San Jose
A city in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, it is the third-most populous city in California and the tenth-most populous in the U.S., and is also the home of the world-famous Silicon Valley. World-renowned large high-tech companies (Apple, Intel, Yahoo, eBay, HP, Firefox, Google, etc.) are all gathered here.
The culture of San Jose is very diverse, and Chinese immigrants have ample room to freely develop in politics, economy, and culture. Many new immigrants from China no longer engage in traditional industries like catering, but instead showcase their talents in the high-tech fields of Silicon Valley, and they often choose to live in villa communities near Silicon Valley. Life is also very convenient, with local Chinese television stations broadcasting Chinese news and dramas every night.
Irvine
A city in Orange County, California, planned and designed by the famous architect William Pereira. It is near the ocean and has a pleasant climate, possessing the famous California sunshine. Although the newly built city of Irvine has only been incorporated for about 30 years, it is a desired destination for many U.S. immigrants, with nearly 30% of its residents being of Asian descent. Irvine has excellent urban planning, broad investment and employment prospects for an emerging city, sound government management and services, and good public safety. Therefore, many favorable factors have become the main reasons for people from various countries, including Chinese, to move here. Additionally, excellent institutions such as the University of California, Irvine are located here.
