Since ancient times, children's education has been the top priority for Chinese parents. This is especially true when children face the Gaokao—a bridge that thousands of students must cross—where a single point can decide the fate of thousands, highlighting the intense competitive pressure. Meanwhile, being admitted to top domestic universities like Tsinghua University and Peking University is the dream of many students, who study diligently for a decade just to achieve success in the Gaokao.
We often hear people say, "Don't let your child lose at the starting line." This is certainly true; when it comes to the Gaokao, a strategic identity may help a child win at the starting line. A Turkish passport could potentially turn the narrow bridge of the Gaokao into a multi-lane overpass.
This is because, according to Tsinghua University's admissions policy, undergraduate admissions for international students have used an application-based review system since 2017, eliminating the written examination. Not only is the written exam waived, but scholarships are also available. In other words, foreigners wishing to study for an undergraduate degree at Tsinghua do not need to take a written exam; they simply need to submit application materials and pass an interview after the review process.
Taking the 2019 Tsinghua University International Student (Undergraduate) Admissions Brochure as an example, foreign candidates only need to provide their high school graduation grades and reach a certain level of Chinese proficiency to be exempted from the entrance examination. It is worth noting that for individuals who were originally Chinese citizens and subsequently acquired foreign nationality, Tsinghua University complies with the Ministry of Education's Document [2009] No. 83.
In other words, students formerly of Chinese nationality who have immigrated abroad can also participate in Tsinghua's international undergraduate admissions, which also uses the application-review system without a written exam. However, they must have held a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for at least 4 years and have actually resided in a foreign country for at least 2 years in the last 4 years. Put simply, by completing the identity transition through immigration at least 4 years before entering university, one can enjoy the benefits of being an international student exempt from the written entrance exam for Tsinghua University.
For Chinese parents who pin their hopes on their children's success, planning an overseas identity in advance will be the greatest asset in helping their children secure admission to top domestic universities.
