Australia's high-quality education system and numerous renowned institutions attract students from around the world to study in Australia. For those students aiming to immigrate to Australia, is studying in Australia a viable pathway? In fact, Australia does not have a specific policy for international student immigration. However, international students in Australia can find opportunities to immigrate through other Australian immigration policies after graduation.
1. Primary Options for International Students to Immigrate to Australia: Australian Skilled Migration
The Australian Skilled Migration program has become the primary option for international students applying for immigration to Australia due to its lower costs, shorter approval timelines, and fewer asset requirements. Australian Skilled Migration is divided into three categories: the Australian Independent Skilled Visa (Subclass 189), the Australian State Nomination Visa (Subclass 190), and the Regional Skilled Visa (Subclass 489). Among these, the Australian Independent Skilled Visa (Subclass 189) and the Australian State Nomination Visa (Subclass 190) are the main immigration pathways for international students.
2. Alternative Options for International Students to Immigrate to Australia: Employer-Sponsored Migration
Compared to skilled migration, which has higher requirements, employer-sponsored migration is applicable to a wider audience. Therefore, many international students who may not score highly enough or whose nominated occupations do not meet the requirements for skilled migration can turn to the employer-sponsored migration pathway. The employer-sponsored migration is divided into three categories: the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) Visa, the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186), and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187).
Due to the ongoing reforms in the TSS Visa regime, there are many uncertainties. Additionally, the Australian Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) has certain work experience requirements that may be difficult for international students to meet. Therefore, it is recommended that international students consider the Australian Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187) as a direct pathway to immigrate to Australia. If they have relevant work experience before studying, the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) is also a viable option.
