WorldWay Immigration has learned: President Trump delivered a speech on national security and the humanitarian crisis at the southern border on Friday morning at the White House. President Trump stated that he would utilize executive orders to bypass Congress and allocate billions of dollars from other federal budget sources to construct the barrier.
White House Press Secretary Sanders subsequently posted a photo on Twitter, confirming that President Trump has signed the executive order.
President Trump stated that he plans to use approximately $8 billion to construct the barrier. Part of this funding has already been approved by Congress, while the remainder will come from his executive order, including funds accessed through the national emergency declaration.
On Thursday, both houses of Congress passed a border security bill that received bipartisan support, allocating funds to the federal government and thus preventing another government shutdown. However, this border security bill only allocates $1.4 billion for constructing a barrier along a 90-kilometer section of the U.S.-Mexico border, which is significantly less than the $5.7 billion requested by President Trump.
The Democrats had previously expressed strong opposition to the declaration of a national emergency, accusing President Trump of abusing presidential power. Some states that lost federal funding as a result also indicated they would file legal lawsuits.
