After obtaining the Portugal Golden Visa through the Portugal Golden Residence Program for five years, some individuals may choose to acquire Portuguese nationality for various reasons, thus obtaining the highly valuable Portuguese EU passport.
One of the biggest challenges in obtaining a highly valuable passport is the residency requirement. By purchasing a property starting from €350,000 to obtain the Portugal Golden Residence Visa, one can apply for Portuguese citizenship and acquire a passport. This is currently one of the few low-cost investment immigration programs in Western European countries to obtain an EU passport, with almost no residency requirements.
According to the amendment to the Portuguese Nationality Law issued by the Portuguese government in July 2018, the residency requirement for citizenship application has been reduced from six years to five years. This means that holders of the Portugal Golden Residence Visa only need to accumulate 35 days of residence in Portugal within five years and pass the Portuguese A2 level exam to qualify for Portuguese citizenship and obtain the Portuguese EU passport, with almost no residency requirements.
Many investors worry that while the residency requirement issue is resolved, they still need to pass the Portuguese A2 level exam. Will this exam be difficult? Let’s explore this together with WorldWay Immigration.
The Portuguese language proficiency test, known as the CAPLE test, is specifically designed for non-Portuguese native speakers by the Portuguese Language Testing Center at the University of Lisbon. So, what is the Portuguese A2 level?
The Portuguese A2 level exam consists of three parts: written test, listening test, and speaking test:
1. Written test: Duration is 1 hour and 15 minutes, accounting for 45% of the total score;
2. Listening test: Duration is 30 minutes, accounting for 30% of the total score;
3. Speaking test: Duration is 10-15 minutes, accounting for 25% of the total score.
The exam covers topics including personal interests, ordering food in restaurants, booking hotels, daily life introductions, asking for and giving directions, inquiries and responses at banks and post offices, verbal complaints, requesting help in emergencies, common questions and answers while traveling, shopping in malls, etc.
The Portuguese A2 level exam results are categorized into three levels:
1. Muito Bom (Excellent, scores between 85-100);
2. Bom (Good, scores between 70-84);
3. Suficiente (Satisfactory, scores between 55-69);
If you can generally understand and read the following items, then the Portuguese A2 level exam should not be a problem:
▪ Understand simple notices posted by utility companies (stores, supermarkets, banks, post offices, hospitals) in streets and other places;
▪ Understand schedules (such as transportation tickets and business hours);
▪ Understand simple spatial orientations and directions of movement;
▪ Understand basic accommodation information and guides;
▪ Understand simple medication instructions, including when (after meals) and why (for headaches) to take medication;
▪ Recognize sections of newspapers and magazines, such as sports sections, classified ads, etc.;

▪ Be able to write formal texts, such as postcards or letters in a personal capacity;
▪ Be able to write short messages or make requests to colleagues regarding daily matters.
Additionally, after obtaining the Portugal Golden Residence status, according to Portuguese law, couples married for more than three years can apply for Portuguese nationality without passing the A2 level exam if one spouse passes the exam, and minor children can also apply for citizenship without passing the Portuguese A2 level exam.
As seen above, the Portuguese A2 level exam is not difficult. As long as one family member passes the A2 level exam, the entire family can apply for citizenship.
