EU Citizens Residing in Cyprus
If you are an EU citizen residing in Cyprus, you have two options:
1) You can use your EU standard driver's license in Cyprus.
Provided that:
a) The license was issued by an EU member state;
b) It is within its validity period (usually 10-15 years, depending on specific EU country regulations);
c) You meet the minimum age requirement for a Cypriot driver's license (18 years old).
Note: Holders cannot change the address on their EU license to an address outside the issuing country. This means that if the address currently on your license is from the original EU issuing country, even though you now reside in Cyprus, the license remains valid under EU rules.
2) You can also exchange your EU driver's license for a Cypriot driver's license.
Note: If your driver's license is not in Greek or English, you must provide a certified translation.
Cyprus Residents Temporarily Using an International Driver's License
For international driver's licenses, the validity period for use in Cyprus is six months, starting from the date of entry into Cyprus. After six months, you must obtain a local Cypriot driver's license. If you have already been in the country for 2 months, the remaining validity of your license is 4 months.
Taking a Chinese driver's license as an example for exchange:
If you have resided in Cyprus for more than 183 days (6 months) within a year, you can exchange your license for a Cypriot one without taking a test;
Take your valid Chinese driver's license to the PIO (Press and Information Office) in Nicosia for translation, then proceed with the license exchange procedures at the Road Transport Department in your city of residence (proof of residence for more than six months is required);
After receiving the Cypriot driver's license (EU unified version), the Chinese driver's license must be surrendered.
How to obtain a local Cypriot driver's license?
To become familiar with traffic and regulations in Cyprus and to facilitate your future life, it is recommended that applicants obtain a Cypriot driver's license:
Applicants must prove that they have resided in Cyprus for at least 6 months.
Applicants are required to take an exam, and the license obtained upon passing the exam has a validity of 15 years.
Application materials for the driver's license (must be submitted by the applicant to the transport department)
a) A fully completed T.O.M.7B form. (The form is in Greek, with a corresponding English version available for reference);
b) Two passport-sized photos (40*35);
c) Residence permit;
d) Proof of residence in Cyprus for more than 6 months (utility bills can be submitted);
e) A copy of the passport's main page;
f) A certain fee (subject to the official website);
g) The original of the previous national driver's license and 2 copies; the previous license must be surrendered and discontinued.
Driver's license process:
1, Learner's Permit: First, you must obtain a learner's permit from the local transport department, which allows you to learn to drive when accompanied by someone who holds a driver's license. Two personal photos are required. The processing fee is €20, and it is valid for one year.
2, Apply for the Road Sign Test: After obtaining the learner's permit, apply for the road sign test. Once the application is successful, an exam time will be scheduled. The examiner will point to various signs on a paper, and you must explain what they mean. (You will need to present various nationality documents before this test, and there will be a certain fee involved)
3, Apply for the Road Test: After passing the road sign test, the road test will be scheduled approximately 15 days later. A fee is required to apply for the road test. An examiner will be assigned by lottery on the day of the test. Before the road test, you will be tested on signs again.
4, Notification of Exam Results: If you do not pass, you can apply to retake the test, usually one month later. The number of lessons required depends on individual skill levels; there are no strict requirements.
Important considerations for driving in Cyprus
1, You must be at least eighteen years old to drive a car in Cyprus, and at least seventeen years old to drive a motorcycle.
2, Cyprus strictly requires drivers and passengers to wear seat belts. Failure to comply will result in a fine of 85 Euros per instance.
3, Children under five are not allowed to sit in the passenger seat; they must use a suitable child safety seat. Children over five may use the passenger seat but must wear a child seat belt.
4, Drivers are prohibited from using mobile phones while driving; otherwise, they will be subject to a fine of 85 Euros.
5, Smoking is not allowed in vehicles carrying passengers under 16 years of age. Failure to comply will result in a fine of 85 Euros.
6, All roads in Cyprus are toll-free.
7, In case of an emergency, you can call 112 or 199.
