It is well known that Canada is a highly livable country with countless benefits. Recently, Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development of Canada, announced a new parental benefit program—an additional 5 weeks of parental leave! This will take effect on March 17, 2019.
The new program stipulates that parental leave will be extended by 5 weeks, but this extension comes with certain conditions.
Currently, the existing parental leave in Canada is 35 weeks, approximately 8 months, and both parents can apply. If they do not apply together, after the mother has taken her 35 weeks of parental leave and returns to work, the father can also take an additional 35 weeks of parental leave! This means that if they take turns applying, they can have a total of 70 weeks, which is about 16 months of time spent with the child. However, if both parents apply at the same time, they must share the 35 weeks of leave.
The new parental leave program will extend the shared 35 weeks of leave by an additional 5 weeks, during which employment insurance and parental benefits will be provided. This means that there will be a total of 10 months during which both parents can stay at home together with the baby.
Parents of children born or adopted on or after March 17, 2019, including same-sex parents and adoptive parents, will be eligible to apply for this benefit program.
The federal government is accelerating the implementation of this new timeline. This program aims to allow new parents to share the responsibilities of raising children more equitably, promoting gender equality in the workplace. Government data shows that 85% of parental benefits are claimed by women, and they tend to take longer leave.
Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality in Canada, stated that if the responsibility of caring for children disproportionately falls on women, it will have negative consequences for the economy and society. Monsef said in a statement: "Encouraging all parents to take full-time care of their children will help create greater economic security for women while strengthening the bond between fathers or parents and their children."
Having both parents at home caring for a newborn not only provides more support for the mother after childbirth but also helps eliminate barriers that women face in the workplace after giving birth, as there is a common perception that they are primarily responsible for raising children.
In fact, at the beginning of a child's life, both fathers and mothers are equally important, and Canada's parental leave is truly thoughtful!
Especially for families with children, the benefits are meticulous and considerate! In Canada, not only can mothers take maternity leave, but fathers also have parental leave!
